This is a picture of "The Jet," a car that lived a very interesting and abused life early on. A previous owner caught air and came down hard, twisting the front of the framerails under the weight of the engine. The next owner crashed it into something hard; the body was replaced from the firewall forward in the early eighties. Luckily all the damage was repaired very well. After that it was driven kindly by the third owner, something we have continued doing since our purchase in 1994.

This is our first Vette and it will remain a driver (it's just too doggone fun and too well-used to be anything but). It is not a high-dollar sinkhole; our investment in this car still hasn't reached the 5-digit mark. We love this car very much, regardless of its squeeks and idiosyncracies. To us it's a member of our family. Sherry has been around Corvettes since she was a little girl, and her father has owned many since 1969. Current mileage of this one is 110,000 miles and climbing. The engine has never been apart and passes our emissions tests bi-yearly with great success. Our work to the car has included new carpet, interior detail and paint, cloth insert replacement in seat, fan shroud, and new silver paint in `97. In 1995 I had a local muffler shop weld up a 2 1/2" system from the convertor back, utilizing aluminized pipe and Turbo Mufflers. I was surprised that a simple modification like bigger exhaust would wake up an engine like the 180hp L-48, especially one with over 100,000 miles. I have also done some work to the air cleaner, removing restrictors and modifying the lid to cover only the air filter (that perked up the bottom end considerably). The best part of The Jet is the Gymkhana suspension. It may be old, and it may be somewhat tired, but it'll take a corner like a slot car. Never mind the low-horsepower rating; this car is fun fun fun!
